Cocoa:Why Apple Will Turn to Holograms - Businessweek

Why Apple Will Turn to Holograms - Businessweek
Look around your office hallway or college campus and you’ll see people holding interactive panes of glass. Smartphones and tablets, so revolutionary a few years ago, are quickly becoming commodities. "

First use of Obi-wan in a serious article about Apple products, seriously.

iOS Apps From Google and Others Improve on Apple Defaults - Liz Gannes - Mobile - AllThingsD
Instead of Music, I like Spotify, TuneIn and Songza. Instead of Weather, I prefer Weather Live. Instead of Notes, I try to use Evernote.

Arguably, an operating system is measured by the strength and vitality of the offerings from independent software vendors. Or we might measure the success of Windows gaming by Minesweeper.

That Freckled Girl in a T-Shirt and Jeans Is Your Typical Mac User - Ina Fried - News - AllThingsD: "The typical Mac user is a freckled woman in a T-shirt and jeans."

This is a funny story. Different locales probably feature different laptop demographics, but where I sit and do coffeee/code, Mac users come in all shapes and sizes.

Cocoa:Early Apple prototypes by frog design's Hartmut Esslinger featured in upcoming book

Early Apple prototypes by frog design's Hartmut Esslinger featured in upcoming book: "Most of the examples come from the 'Snow White' design language, a version of which ultimately came to market with the Apple IIc, and are similar to actual Apple products, while others are more abstract and bear no resemblance to anything that came out of Cupertino. "

Many fond memories of the stylish Apple IIc, but my teeth were cut on the ][+. Two plus forever!

Cocoa:Facebook to Launch Its Own Snapchat Competitor App - Mike Isaac - Social - AllThingsD

Facebook to Launch Its Own Snapchat: "Facebook is currently testing its own built-in-house version of a ‘Snapchat-like’ application, a messaging app that allows users to send impermanent photo messages to one another, according to sources familiar with the matter."

You can be sure that somewhere there is a small group of engineers who have a display monitoring all the perky photos running through a system like that. If you don't believe it, you've never met an engineer capable of building the backend for such a system.

Cocoa:Apple granted rights to new process for creating high-quality curved glass

Apple granted rights to new process for creating high-quality curved glass: "While curved glass enclosures have emerged as a hallmark of Samsung's latest smartphone designs, it was revealed this week that Apple has also expressed interest in the subject, "

I think this is moving in the direction of a phone that looks like a BANG & OLUFSEN product. Hopefull the UI will not be incomprehensible.

Old People // ben's blog: "Your startup is going well and as your business expands, you hear the dreaded words from someone on your board: ‘You need to hire some senior people. Some real ‘been there, done that’ executives to help you get the company to the next level.’ "

As I recall, this strategy didn't really help Apple (ie. John Sculley).

Cocoa:Google's Eric Schmidt says Android 'clearly' winning against Apple in phones

Google's Eric Schmidt says Android 'clearly' winning against Apple in phones: "With a wide range of devices at numerous price points running the Android operating system, Google's mobile platform is 'clearly' winning over Apple's iOS, Eric Schmidt believes."

I'm not sure that more users and a fragmented device base is necessarily winning. Gross margin is a form of winning.

Cocoa:AppleInsider | News and rumors since 1997

AppleInsider | News and rumors since 1997: "Twitter rolled out updates to its official iOS and Android apps on Monday, adding new image editing features including Instagram-like image filters after Instagram halted support for in-app photo viewing on Sunday."

The problem is that Instagram and almost every other "vintage camera" app out there are all based on the exact same OpenGLES sample code from Apple.

Almost any Photoshop professional can recreate the Instagram effects with layers and blending modes. Which means so can anyone else.

Instagram Changes Photo Display on Twitter - Mike Isaac - Social - AllThingsD: "The cards are on the table, and it’s getting ugly. From now on, you may happen to notice Instagram photos appearing oddly on Twitter."

I think it's interesting that only Google and YouTube and maybe a handful of other tech companies have the discipline to keep giving away bandwidth no matter what.
